Hard drives are available in different storage capacities nowadays. Therefore choosing a hard drive with the right capacity leaves many of us in confusion. Whether you should go for a 500GB or 1TB hard drive, still remains a mystery among PC enthusiasts. Whenever I choose a hard drive, I look at many factors apart from just its capacity to store data. So in this article, I will leave my honest suggestion to let you decide which option is better to go for, 500GB or 1TB.
Should You Get a 500GB or 1TB SSD?
A 500 GB SSD hard drive is faster than a 1TB of SATA hard drive. However, the 1TB SATA hard drive can store more data as compared to the 500GB SSD drive. So, it entirely depends upon the purpose for which you are buying a hard drive. If you are looking for capacity, 1TB is the ideal choice. But if you are looking for performance and speed, SSD would be your final bet.
If you are don’t want to store tons of videos and pictures, I highly recommend you to go with a 500GB SSD or NVMe M.2 SSD (depending upon the compatibility of your motherboard). Both of these types are faster and sheer boost the performance of your PC.
On the other hand, if you are a gamer or a person who stores large chunks of data, you have to go for more capacity, in this case, a hard drive with 1TB would be a better choice.
Moreover, SSD hard drive has almost zero chances of mechanical failure as compared to the SATA hard drive.
Speed Matters A Lot
Speed is something that I always focus on whenever choosing a storage device for a PC. Many people believe that with large capacity comes more performance, this is completely wrong. In my old laptop, I had 128GB NVMe M.2 SSD and 1TB normal SATA hard drive. There was a huge difference in the speed and performance of both drives.
128GB NVMe M.2 SSD was way faster than the other 1TB SATA drive in all cases. Yes, there was a huge difference in writing and reading speeds.
Price
More capacity means more price. But sometimes even hard drives with lower capacity are expensive than the ones with more capacity. Also, hard drives with the same brand and model but different capacities have minor differences in price.
So, if the difference between the price of a 500GB or 1TB hard drive is less, go for a 1TB version. New applications and games need more space, so having a hard drive with more capacity would be an ideal option to have at this point.
An Honest Verdict
A 500GB SSD hard drive is good enough to meet your storage needs if you have nothing to do with PC gaming or storing movies. But if you keep more files on your computer and play AAA game titles like Call of Duty Modern Warfare (which needs 231GB space to install), you have to go for a 1TB hard drive.
With the arrival of NVMe M.2 SSDs, it is now affordable for everyone to install more storage in their computer. So always go for a faster hard drive with more capacity, as the price difference is minor between a 500GB or 1TB hard drive. Paying few more bucks gives you more space to install your favorite games or movies.
